What is Strong Customer Authentication?

Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) is a security requirement that helps ensure only you can access and use your Luxon Pay account.

It works by verifying your identity using two or more independent factors, such as something you know (like a password), something you have (your device), or a biometric check. This helps prevent fraud and unauthorised access.

SCA is part of the EU’s PSD2 regulation and is designed to keep your money and personal data safe.

What is Authorised Push Payment (APP) fraud?

Authorised Push Payment (APP) fraud is when someone tricks you into sending money to them – often by pretending to be a trusted contact, like your bank, a business, or even a family member.

Because you authorise the payment yourself, it can be harder to spot and difficult to reverse. It can affect anyone, and the amounts involved can be significant.

We want you to know what to look out for.

What are the types of Authorised Push Payment (APP) fraud?

APP fraud takes many forms. Here are the most common types to be aware of:

• Invoice scams – Fake invoices designed to trick you into paying the wrong account

• Romance scams – Scammers build fake relationships and request money

• Family or friend impersonation – A fraudster pretends to be someone you know and claims there is an urgent need for funds

• Property purchase scams – False banking details are provided during a home purchase

• Contractor scams – Fake builders or service providers request advance payments

• Account takeovers – Criminals gain access to your account and make unauthorised payments

What are common examples of APP scams?

APP scams can show up in everyday situations. Here are some real-world examples of what to watch out for:

• Home renovation scams – A fake invoice appears from your builder with altered bank details

• New bank details scams – A supplier claims to have changed their payment details to divert your payment

• Property purchase scams – Bank details are changed mid-transaction to reroute property payments

• Family impersonation scams – A message appears to be from a relative requesting urgent financial help

• Social media relationship scams – A scammer builds trust and then asks for money before disappearing

How can you protect yourself from potential scams?

Here are some steps you can take to keep your account and money safe:

• Never share your one-time passcodes (OTPs) or PINs
• Do not give personal details over the phone unless you are certain of the caller’s identity
• Check your account regularly for any unfamiliar activity
• Use strong, unique passwords and PINs
• Change your passwords regularly and include a mix of letters, numbers, and special characters
• Keep your contact details up to date so we can reach you quickly if needed

If something doesn’t feel right, stop and check. Contact us if you’re unsure.
